History and Politics: The Dominican Republic

 The Dominican Republic has a long history of politics and includes many revolution. The Dominican Republic was ruled by the France and Spain and occupied by Haiti and the United States. In the early history of the island, it was called Santo Domingo and was developed by the Spanish Empire. 



The history of the island started out by Christopher Columbus. In 1496 the Spaniards set up the first colony in the Western hemisphere at Santo Domingo. The island of the Dominican Republic experience the political and civil disorder, ethnic tensions and military rule. The dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and the military of the United States had a lot of trouble of those who are neighboring Haiti. 

In 1795, the eastern of Hispaniola to France as a defeat in the wars that have been raging in Europe. The French control of the economy and decline of the colony while there was a rise in slavery that had begun in the Saint-Domingue. Led by Toussaint Louverture, the Haitians succeeded throwing off French rule and also ended the Spanish eastern part of the island. A lot of dictatorship begun to happen through this time between the rulers of the island.

  1. Hi Mackenzie, I thought this was very interesting! I think it's cool how much history there is about the Dominican Republic and instead of the British ruling the Dominican Republic, it was the french! A small recommendation is that you might wanna remove the spacing on the upper paragraph!

  2. Hi Mackenzie, I want to start off my saying how informative and neatly formatted your page is! I have always viewed the Dominican Republic as a luxurious island, but it seems to have a vast history as well. You made sure to mention information on the colonization and wars that occurred there. Along with that, you also provided images to visualize the important people.
    In addition to that, I believe that you may want to add some more information. You have a good amount, but I would add some more detail. You may also want to consider putting your sources in MLA format, as it is mentioned in the rubric.
    Overall, I think your page looks great and you are quite creative!
